Tips for a Safe Summer Vacation

Summer vacations are a time to relax, unwind, and make precious memories to enjoy for years to come. While some of these memories may be more embarrassing than others, one thing they should never be is a reminder of a painful accident or injury. Keep your family safe this summer with these tips for a safe vacation:

Be safe in the sun. Sunburns are painful and can be severe enough to cause blistering and increase the risk of skin cancer. Be sure you apply sunscreen frequently, and never use an outdated product. If more protection is desired, long sleeves, pants, and hats can provide a physical barrier from the sun’s rays. You may also plan to spend peak UV exposure hours in the shade. Wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays to protect your eyes.

Know what poison oak, poison ivy, and sumac look like. In the U.S., these three plants are widespread and can cause a painful rash that is easily spread. If your encounter the plant, thoroughly wash affected areas and any clothing or objects that come into contact. The rash is spread by the oils produced by these plants, and can easily be spread by contaminated objects. Learn where they are found, what they look like, and how to treat them in case you are exposed.

Know how to avoid ticks. Deer ticks are common in some areas and can carry Lyme disease. Know where the ticks are most common, and wear protective clothing when in those areas. Use an insect repellent to discourage them, and check yourself and children carefully for bites.

Never swim alone. If you are alone, there is no one to help should you need it. Whether in a lake, pool, or ocean, know what your limits are, and get out of the water before you reach them. Never leave children unattended, even if there are lifeguards nearby. Avoid going in the water if you have been drinking alcohol.

Know how to handle a riptide. Beaches are a fun place to go in summer, but dangerous riptides can overpower even the strongest swimmers. Teach your children how to handle a riptide, and explain how to swim diagonally across the tide while calling for help.

Wear a lifejacket. If you are enjoying kayaking, waterskiing, jet skiing, sailing, or other activities on a boat, wear a properly fitted lifejacket. If you are unconscious or injured and fall overboard, a lifejacket can keep you afloat until you are rescued.

Wear a helmet. Activities like bicycling, roller skating, and off-road vehicles like dirt bikes require the use of helmets to protect you in the event of an accident. Head injuries are the leading cause of death in cycling accidents.

Prepare for allergic reactions. Allergic reactions can be deadly if not treated quickly. If you have known allergies, wear identification warning of your allergies and carry medication.

Prevent and treat common travel illnesses. Motion sickness, altitude sickness, and stomach problems aren’t uncommon when traveling. Know how to treat these illnesses, and carry medications to help prevent or treat them.

Bring your prescriptions. For many people, forgetting their prescriptions can mean an emergency. Pack your medications in your carry-on bag in case your checked luggage is lost or delayed. You may also request an additional prescription from your doctor to take along if you are traveling abroad. Check that your medications don’t cause photosensitivity if you are planning to spend lots of time outside.

Avoid dehydration. Drink plenty of fluids to help your body adjust to the hot weather, and take plenty of breaks. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are real dangers, so it is important to keep cool and hydrated when traveling or enjoying summer activities.
